FATHOMS

‘A drawing is an autobiographical record of ones discovery of an event - seen, remembered or imagined’
The Basis of All Painting and Sculpture is Drawing from Landscapes by John Berger 2016

FATHOMS is a new series of work that has been made within the last year.
Made with Indian Ink, a brush (used for the first time in years) and on robust 638 gsm watercolour paper they are a series of drawings; drawings that are informed from ideas of exploring structure and depth; inpeneratble depth.
Prior to this I had been concentrating on making paintings; paintings made using screen printing techniques on aluminium panels. The change in materials and approach has allowed for a more spontaneous exploration of shape and depth whilst simultaneously retaining a certain flatness to the image.
The contrast and ambiguity between apparent depth and apparent solidity is intriguing and the objective of making something that is simultaneously itself and a metaphor for something else, something less easy to define, is taking shape.
